British Era Bridge Break Down at Mumbai-Goa Highway – Maharashtra Government Rescue Operations to find out the victims
Mumbai: Today, 3rd August midnight at 1am a disaster had happened at Mumbai-Goa Highway. The Goa- Mumbai highway bridge was collapsed suddenly due to heavy flood water flow. In this tragedy, 2 buses were missed and also 22 people are supposed to be missing. The rescue operations are speeded up by the Government. The bridge was an old construction that has been built in the British’s time in India. More updates of the incident are as follows.
Reasons behind the Mumbai- Goa Bridge Broke Down
The Bridge which is located in Konkan region in Maharashtra is said to be an old one, and it could not resist the heavy flow of the flood water. The bridge is constructed before 70 years approximately. As per the information from the sources, nearly 22 people were missing due to the bridge collapse at highway.
Rescue Operations by Maharashtra Government
As per the information from the Goa and Mumbai regions 2 buses carrying 11 passengers each were wiped away in the heavy water stream. Also the drivers and conductors of the buses were missing including the passengers travelling in it.
Raigad Collector Sheetal Ugale has said that, there is no contact from any of the drivers / passengers of the buses. Also it was reported that, approximately 5, 6 private vehicles are also missing. Government has fastened the rescue operations to find out the missing people. The Mahad depot, Ugale of Maharashtra Government is trying to contact the concerned persons of passengers. The ICG teams were speeded up the searching for victims and vehicles using the helicopters.
At least two buses and several other vehicles went missing near Mahad city after the bridge, more than seven decades old and a critical link to the Mumbai-Goa National Highway, crashed around 1 am due to the flood waters rushing into the river.
“The bridge was built during the British era. After discussion with the National Highways Authority, we have shifted traffic to the new parallel bridge nearby. We are trying to confirm reports of other missing vehicles,” Ugale said.
Rescue Operations from Central and State Governments
Rehabilitation Minister Chandrakant Patil had before said helicopters would be sent and the assistance of barrier powers was taken to look the missing vehicles. In the mean time, a 45-part National Disaster Response Force group has achieved Raigad from Pune to help with the salvage operations.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said that PM Narendra Modi had called him in the morning and guaranteed all assistance from Center. NDRF groups have come to and doing search operations, the Maharashtra CM included. Raigad Collector has also affirmed that restricted movement has now continued on the new scaffold, he included.
